Mt. pleasant Baptist church

Proudly serving Charles city since 1776

Our history

Mount Pleasant Baptist Church is deeply involved in the past and present of Charles City County and traces its roots and origin to the year 1776 when early Baptists formed a church in the county. Baptists have been active in Charles City County since revolutionary days and Mount Pleasant Church is certainly the direct result of their efforts.  Records of Dover Baptist Association show this church was admitted to that body in 1815 and continues in uninterrupted service to this day.

William Clopton and his son, James, were among the early Baptist preachers in the area and Robert Tisdale was the first mentioned pastor of Mount Pleasant.  Rev. Tisdale came to Charles City and, according to Court House records, purchased property near the present church site in 1815.

As is the case with many old churches, records have been lost or destroyed, but enough evidence is available in county records, church history documents, and family Bibles to show that Mount Pleasant was instrumental in founding and assisting other churches, providing Sunday School activities, baptisms, and generally providing a profound influence for good in the lives of those it reached.

It is difficult to confront the old white frame building on Route 615 and not get a feeling of involvement in history and, even possibly, be drawn back in time to the days of the great plantations and later to the tragic era of the War Between the States.  A number of the Confederate Sons of Charles City are buried in the church yard and many of their descendants are active members of Mount Pleasant today.
